Search and index fails with various errors ("No such file or directory", "java.io.IOException: background merge hit exception") (Doc ID 1985780.1)

Symptoms

Performing search against global index on Contributor UI occasionally yields error

"Error occurred during search. Please change your
search query and try again. If the problem persists,
please contact your system administrator."

And bulk / ad-hoc search reindex occasionally fails, with errors such as:
