Upgrade From 7.6.2 To 11.1.1.8.0 Fails with Protocol Violation Errors (Doc ID 2004304.1)

Symptoms

The upgrade from WebCenter Sites (former Fatwire) 7.6.2 to WebCenter Sites 11.1.1.8.0 fails during the second phase (while attempting to write data in the DB), we can see the following errors in the futuretense.txt/sites.log :

[ERROR] [fatwire.logging.cs.db] SQLException in prepared execute on table AssetType: SELECT * FROM AssetType WHERE assettype = ?
         assettype = Slots
         java.sql.SQLException: Protocol violation: [16, 6, 7, 1]
         at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CTTIfun.receive(T4CTTIfun.java:565)
         at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CTTIfun.doRPC(T4CTTIfun.java:240)
        
[ERROR] [cs.core.db.DBTransaction] Transaction commit failed
         java.sql.SQLException: Protocol violation: [84]
         at oracle.jdbc.driver.T4CTTIfun.receive(T4CTTIfun.java:565)
