Random Timeout Error When Viewing Assets in Web Mode

Symptoms
The editor displays the following error randomly when Web mode is used to view an asset:
"Timeout Error Unsaved changes may have been lost.All other content is secure."
There is a "Login again" link and it does not ask for credentials when clicked so the session is still ok.
When the issue occurs an error is logged in sites.log:
[2014-10-23 14:03:22,921 EEST] [ERROR] [.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] [fatwire.cs.ui.framework] Forbidden: Invalid User
