SSLException when connecting to Sites via CatalogManager direct to Tomcat http application server port, when Tomcat is configured for a SSL-enabled reverse proxy

Symptoms
When Sites is running on Tomcat over http, and is accessed via a SSL-enabled reverse proxy, then it is possible to log into Sites UI via the SSL reverse proxy, but it is not possible to log into Sites application server directly using CatalogMover.
The following error is received in sites.log:
