How to Manually Remove an Item From the Workflow Queue

How can a Workflow item be cleared from the Workflow queue?
Approver clicks on the actions button "document review" and receives an error on webpage:
" System Error: Unable to retrieve workflow information for 'abcdefg-1234'. The content item is no longer in workflow"
User does not see an option to delete from workflow queue. When selecting the 'Actions' button for the document, an error is thrown: 'Content is no longer in workflow'.
