Mobile Siteplan Error - Caused by: java.net.UnknownHostException (Doc ID 2046077.1)

Symptoms

When clicking on a page under the mobile siteplan , the following error is shown: An exception occurred on the server while executing UI/Layout/CenterPane/Advanced: UIException: . If problem persists please contact the system administrator.
this error doesn't show up in other siteplans and it is also only occurring on some computers.

This error does not occur when accessing the site from an internal URL.
Errors in the logs are:
