Stuck Threads When OWSM-Enabled Business Service is Invoked

Stuck thread are seen in SOA 12c Weblogic Console when a synchronous Business Service is invoked.
The JVM goes into a warning state and there are stuck threads seen in the WebLogic Console.
The NullPointerException below is seen in the logs:
