Slow Applet Start after Upgrade from Java SE 6 Update 45 (Doc ID 2122306.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 06, 2018

Applies to:

Java SE JDK and JRE - Version 7 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

After upgrading from Java SE 6 update 45 to Java SE 7 update 76, applet launch performance is slower.  The start-up process now takes much more time reading through all of the cache folders, certificates, and rt.jar.  The same behavior is seen with tests on 7u91 and 8u40.

Without a process monitor, the start time is 1:12 minutes.
With a process monitor, the start time is about 2 minutes.

Results of two tests on 7u76:

Analysis shows long times spent in certificate stores, cache, and rt.jar reads:

  1. Iteration over all certificates in cert store – 1 minute.
  2. Reads rt.jar – this process is continuous even after applet load.  After some time it only reads 1 byte at a time.
  3. Reads all cache folders – 2 minutes.

 Upgrade from Java SE 6u45
