After upgrading from Java SE 6 update 45 to Java SE 7 update 76, applet launch performance is slower. The start-up process now takes much more time reading through all of the cache folders, certificates, and rt.jar. The same behavior is seen with tests on 7u91 and 8u40.
Without a process monitor, the start time is 1:12 minutes.
With a process monitor, the start time is about 2 minutes.
Results of two tests on 7u76:
Analysis shows long times spent in certificate stores, cache, and rt.jar reads:
- Iteration over all certificates in cert store – 1 minute.
- Reads rt.jar – this process is continuous even after applet load. After some time it only reads 1 byte at a time.
- Reads all cache folders – 2 minutes.
