Unexpired Content is Indexed and released, but causes "This error is a report only" messages in the logs

Symptoms
After updating "Expiration Date", the content item is indexed and released. The following message was found in the log though.
"The revision with internal ID xxxxx of content item yyyyyy is supposedly the latest revision but is marked as an old revision. This error is a report only and will not modify behavior. An inconsistency was discovered while looking at the possibility of doing workflow action META_UPDATE performed by user xyz."
