Tasks Do Not Expire When Configured for Parallel Assignment

You have a composite with an ApprovalTask configured for parallel assignment, e.g.
You have also configured a deadline so that the task will expire after a period of time. Your expectation is that, if the task should expire before all approvals are completed, processing of the request will terminate. But you observe that if the task expires, processing of the task does not complete, and Approval Details display on the Self Service console show that the request is still in an assigned state. In addition, you observe the following error in the diagnostic log(s) for the SOA managed server:
