Unable to Load PDF Portfolios In Enterprise Capture

Symptoms
In a WebCenter Content system which has an attached an Enterprise Capture instance to allow users to upload documents sent in from field offices, the field offices have been instructed to send in TIF or PDF documents, but standardized control beyond that is difficult because of the decentralized organization.
Some users have been sending in PDF Portfolios documents. Since these are not easily ID'ed, this is not usually noticed until the portfolio is uploaded to Capture.
Capture will not ingested a pdf file created using the Adobe Pro option of combining file using the “Create PDF Portfolio” feature. Is there a workaround to handle portfolios (by converting them to images/regular pdfs), either inside Capture or out, and in a relatively automated manner?
