Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

1. In customers' environment, the cluster communications are through the private networks and not through the public. Only cluster client connections are on the public network.
Is there a way to implement federation wherein replication traffic is routed on the public and not on the private. How to achieve it?

2. Is there a way to identify how much network bandwidth is needed for federation and how to figure that out for a given cluster. Is there any compression or other optimizations done during federation to reduce network usage on the WAN?

2.1. When we use name service to communicate and federate data, does the local and remote participants open up additional ports to communicate?
2.2. How can these ports be governed?
2.3. Is the federation only between storage nodes or proxies also involved?
2.4. How can we restrict extend clients to not use these ports?
2.5. Can you point use to a detailed document about how the federation and named services work together so we are clear about this before implementing it in our environment?
