Looking For Any Documentation On Exact Steps For Doing An 11g To 12C Sites Upgrade (Doc ID 2289143.1)

For the upgrade process, we have to back up the DB & the shared filesystem on 11G to bring over and import into the 12C instance. We were told that the 11g instance needed to be completely down to prevent any access to the 11g environment while the backup is being taken.

1. Is there documentation to details those steps out to provide to management as to why we need a complete outage on 11g. The documentation I've seen so far has steps on how to back up but doesn't mention anything about if the 11g instance that is being backed up needs to be down or not.

2. If the application is up and active when the shared filesystem & DB backup are taken, what could that potentially do to the upgrade process?
