EclipseLink: autoApply Converters Are Not Applied To Attributes Declared In Entity Class With Primitive Types

Symptoms
When converters are configured using annotation @Converter(autoApply=true), the values
written to the database are not converted if it is a simple type (int or boolean).
This issue is also described in:
Bug 443546 - Converter autoApply does not work for primitive types
and marked as fixed in EclipseLink 2.6.0.
But the issue can be replicated in WLS 12.2.1.2.0 (with EclipseLink 2.6.x) also.
