Symptoms

Java SE 8 Update 91 (8u91) and higher versions with Firefox 42 experience applet execution failures when an applet member is accessed via JavaScript.

Three observable symptoms may be seen:

  1. The Java applet security authorization does not get triggered when the applet comes into operation mode.  A "Java Security Warning" dialog box should pop up to allow or disallow authorization, but it does not.  On occasion, the dialog box may appear after a long wait time of about 5-10 minutes if the browser window is kept open for that long.  The applet authorization is not displayed by the JVM at the first attempt and is not evidenced in the Java Console log.
  2. The JavaScript code is unable to access applet members via code such as document.applets['idJavaSun'].status/errorcode which reports as 'undefined' even though the applet is in operational mode.
  3. The JVM takes a very long time to verify signed applets.
