Intermittently Some Users Are Not Able to Access Pending Approvals or Inbox with Errors "A connection to the server has failed. (status=502)" or "Error showing tasklist"

Intermittently, when some users click on the Inbox link or the Provisioning Tasks or Pending Approvals buttons, there is a popup with:
A connection to the server has failed. (status=502)
Error showing tasklist. Possible reasons could be : 1. SOA server connection information is not available. 2. If it is run in federated mode, the default server may be down.
The behavior is not consistent and refreshing the page after receiving the (status=502) error could result in the issue resolving or the user getting the Error showing tasklist... message.
Adjusting the screen width may also resolve the issue.
