When trying to add/update a binary entry (i.e. jpegPhoto, userCertificate, other), update fails as in the following: 

$ ldapmodify -D "cn=directory manager" -w <PASSWORD> -f binary_entry.ldif
modifying entry "cn=test,dc=example,dc=com"
ldapmodify: update failed: cn=test,dc=example,dc=com
ldap_modify: Can't contact LDAP server (-1)


$ cat binary_entry.ldif
dn: cn=test,dc=example,dc=com
changetype: modify
replace: photo;binary
photo;binary:< file:///test.jpeg

Access log output -
