OHS mod_proxy Fails when using SSL with HTTP 502 and SSL Error 28860 (Doc ID 2502679.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 29, 2023

Applies to:

Oracle HTTP Server - Version 12.2.1.2.0 to 12.2.1.3.0 [Release 12c]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

In Oracle HTTP Server(OHS), mod_proxy is being used to ssl proxy requests downstream to other OHSes. Flow is as follows:
User --SSL--> OHS --SSL using mod_proxy--> OHS --mod_wl_ohs--> WLS
                                                                 OHS --mod_wl_ohs--> WLS

The problem, with ssl session cache enabled there are requests failing with 502 proxy errors when the user jumps between the two downstream ohses within session cache timeout. All three OHSes are listening on different hostnames. Can be worked around by disabling ssl session cache. The error is as seen below.
