Search by Public Users in a Portal Returns Blank Page

Symptoms
No results are returned when Public users perform a search in a public Portal. Results are returned as expected when the same search is executed by authenticated users.
In the former case (Public users), the following error is reported in the browser's console:
Access to XMLHTTRequest at '<login_url_from_OAM>' redirected from '<main_portal_site_lbr>' from origin ''<main_portal_site_lbr>' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to prefilight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.
