SQL Statements Containing Duplicate Column Names Fail With ORA-918 (Doc ID 2579305.1)

Symptoms

From SQL*Plus, and from the 11.2 JDBC driver, SQL statements that contain duplicate column names complete successfully.

However, when using the 12.1 (or above) JDBC driver, the same SQL statement fails with the following error:

ORA-918: column ambiguously defined
