How to Create 'Other' Grouping when Too Many Categories In Pie Chart (Doc ID 259658.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 06, 2020

Applies to:

Oracle Reports Developer - Version 9.0.2.2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

The chart that is created by reports has 30 pie slices making the chart undecipherable.

I want to show only the top five slices and have one more slice for "other" showing the percentage for the total of the remaining categories.

Using rank in the Select statement and retrieving only the 5 top categories skews the percentages since the other 25 are ignored.

EXAMPLE:
========

NOTE: In the Example(s) below, the parameters, names, tables, labels, or values represent

a fictitious sample (based upon made up data used in the Oracle Sample Demo tables).

Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental and not intended

in any manner.

Using the DEMO.EMP table for my sample.

If you create a report (tabular or group) with the query
select 1 seed, ename, sal from emp order by ename

Then create a pie chart select seed and ename as the x-Axis and sal for the y-Axis
the result pie has 14 slices.
