TNS-12599 Errors In Database Alert Log When Running JDBC Application (Doc ID 2655395.1)

Symptoms

After an upgrade of the Database from 11.2 to 12.2, there are numerous TNS-12599 "TNS:cryptographic checksum mismatch" errors.
This is coming from activity from a JDBC Thin application using JDBC Thin  12.1.0.2 drivers and JDK 1.8:

The application seems not to be affected, but the alert log is filled with the above errors every minute.

The listener has no refused connections.

Enterprise Manager is not used.
