Symptoms

Java SE 8 JavaFX application on MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) hangs when trying to play video.

This issue occurs only on MacOS 10.15 (Catalina). The problem does not occur on other MacOS versions, such as HighSiera and Mojave.
The issue occurs on all updates of Java SE 8 tested: 8 Update 221, 8 Update 231, 8 Update 241.

The thread always hangs when calling into the media native code, per the following stack trace:
