Questions about JConsole: Why is the JConsole Connect Button Grayed Out (Doc ID 2686964.1)

Goal

When attempting to use JConsole to remotely or locally monitor a Java application, why is the Connect button grayed out?  This makes connection to the target JVM impossible.
Also, what is the default port to establish the remote connection?
