Symptoms

When running the OPatch utility, it is indicating an invalid Java if JAVA_HOME or -jre is not used.

The error is indicating a location that does not currently exist or is not a valid Java installation.

Pointing to a valid Java path by setting JAVA_HOME first or running

opatch lsinventory -jre <path_to_java_installation>

works correctly.
