WLS is acting as a LDAP client, providing some settings under the authentication providers to build LDAP queries to pull users and groups.
In this case, based on the WLS log file with ATN debug flags enabled, we observe the issue isn't related to the authentication, but taking time while pulling the groups.
For this example, 6 groups were pulled, but there are suspect lines pulled as well, such as:
