Symptoms

Unable to Update OPatch:    java -jar 6880880/opatch_generic.jar -silent ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_HOME

Normal output was showing in the console, the process finished, but there were no errors and there weren't any messages reporting cancelation or that the update completed.

In the install logfile the following output was generated:
