Symptoms

Customer uses role membership rules.  User attribute being altered is included in one or more role membership rule tests.   

When committing the changes to the user, the update fails and the following error is raised in the diagnostic log file:

Note that the rule will evaluate successfully either using the 'Evaluate membership rule now' checkbox in the rule definition page, or via the 'Evaluate Role Membership' scheduled task.  Only changes when modifying users raise the error.
