Indexing a large file causes ElasticSearch to crash due to OutOfMemoryError (Java heap space) (Doc ID 2876884.1)

Symptoms

Indexing a large file, or zip file containing files of approximately same size, causes ElasticSearch to crash due to OutOfMemoryError (Java heap space).  In this particular case, the zip file contained files of total size 300M.

In the ES log, ElasticSearch ran into OutOfMemoryError due to "Java heap space" while trying to index the document.
