Exalogic: /etc/localtime Timezone File Inconsistency Issue On OL6 & OL7 Guest vServers (Virtual rack) And OL6/OL7 Compute Nodes (Physical rack) (Doc ID 2937573.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 10, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software - Version 2.0.6.4.0 and later
Linux x86-64
Oracle Virtual Server x86-64
Exalogic Virtual Releases 2.0.6.4.X

Symptoms

In Exalogic racks (both physical and Virtual), /etc/localtime timezone file inconsistency issue is noticed on OL6/OL7 Guest vServers, and OL6/OL7 Compute Nodes in Physical rack.

We notice that /etc/localtime file is hard file instead of symbolic link to timezone file inside /usr/share/zoneinfo directory. We do not notice any issues when checking the time or timezone on the affected node due to this inconsistency. Date time is still shown correctly when running "date" command. However, if there are any application processes that are relying on the system time at OS level, those processes will be using GMT timezone instead of actual timezone set on the affected nodes.

Changes

Issue can likely surface due to patching of the Exalogic nodes or manual update of timezone packages.
