Using Oracle10g JDBC Thin With REF CURSOR Fails With SQLException: Bigger type length than Maximum (Doc ID 304402.1)

Symptoms

When using a callable statement to invoke a PL/SQL procedure that returns a ref cursor it will throw following exception:
java.sql.SQLException: Bigger type length than Maximum
This happens only when either using an Oracle10g JDBC 10.1.0.2.0 or 10.1.0.3.0 JDBC thin driver to connect to the database.
