Last updated on MARCH 27, 2025

Applies to:

Oracle Unified Directory - Version 12.2.1.4.0 to 14.1.2.1.0 [Release 12c]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

This Note is just to addon to Main OUD 14c Upgrade documentation about "In Place Upgrade of Collocated OUD/OUDSM 12.2.1.4 to OUD 14c ( 14.1.2.1.0 ) with Elaborated Information ".

This note is just an example reference for upgrade to OUD 14c (14.1.2.1) and OUDSM 14c. Here a simple single node OUD/OUDSM 12c environment is considered as an upgrade to 14c Demonstration example.

This article provides an example showing how to upgrade to OUD 14c (14.1.2.1) and OUDSM 14c on Certified Linux/Windows platforms with and without database per the need, which should be used as a supplement to the Oracle documentation and does not supersede Oracle Documentation showing how to install and configure. Below is an example with screenshots and extra notes taken when going through installation and configuration. Similar steps can be followed for Windows in reference to the Oracle Documentation.

Note: OUDSM is NOT REQUIRED for OUD Server instance functioning. Without OUDSM one must depend on command line tools options to access and manage OUD LDAP data. OUDSM is just an GUI ( Graphical User Interface ) Web/Browser console to connect to same version of OUD server and manage OUD Data. OUDSM can be created in multiple ways. Preferred approach is OUDSM Compact Domain creation via Weblogic Scripting Tool which doesn't need Oracle Database and is called as Compact OUDSM Domain.  Refer section "2.1.b. Creating a Domain for OUDSM Using the WebLogic Scripting Tool" from below Doc ID.

Types of Sample Collocated Setups/Domains that can exist for OUD 12.2.1.4 / OUDSM 12.2.1.4

1. OUD 12.2.1.4 Standalone Mode : (Which mean : No Infrastructure Software ( WLS + ADF ) / No OUDSM / NO ORACLE DATABASE)

Follow below KM Note for upgrading OUD 12.2.1.4 Standalone Mode server instance.  Note that an OUD 12c Standalone instance can be in place upgraded within same 12c ORACLE_HOME or via 14c New ORACLE_HOME. And thus the old 12c  OUD Instance paths still will remain same post upgraded to 14c version.

Note that this standalone instance must be accessed via same version of OUDSM Console from any of OUDSM Host and its not necessary that OUDSM to be running on same Host as of OUD server.

2. OUD 12.2.1.4 Collocated Mode : ( Which mean it may contain : Infrastructure Software ( WLS + ADF ), and May/May not Contain OUDSM / Oracle DB  )

NOTE: Scope of this Note is just about In-place upgrade of OUD 12.2.1.4/OUDSM Collocated Mode.

   >. Sample (Not ALL )Collocated Mode Install Types in 12c can be :

1. OUD 12.2.1.4 Domain & OUDSM Domain in Separate Domain Homes on a given Host.

2. OUD 12.2.1.4 Domain & OUDSM Domain in Same Domain Home on a given Host.

3. OUDSM 12.2.1.4 in a Single Dedicated Domain Home on a Dedicated Host without OUD 12.2.1.4 Server Domain.

4. OUD 12.2.1.4 Server in a Single Dedicated Domain on a Dedicated Host without OUDSM 12.2.1.4 Domain Home.

Decisions to Make Before In-Place Upgrade:

One must go through/refer OUD 14c Upgrade Guide below wherever necessary.

    Release 14.1.2
     Installing Oracle Unified Directory
6 Upgrading the Oracle Unified Directory Software

   1. For a given environment or Hosts, Upgrade OS/DB to Certified Version Per Certification Matrix - So this should be done in separate and first phase.

   2. If OS/DB cannot be upgraded then go with Out-Of-Place Upgrade ( New Hardware/OS). Go with out-Of-Place Upgrade if below is not feasible.

2.1 In case not feasible to do in-place upgrade from 12c ( 12.2.1.4 ) to 14c since 12c is still running on platform lesser than Linux 8 or Linux 9.

         OR

2.2 In case not feasible to upgrade Oracle DB used for OUDSM/ Linux 6 or 7 or old Platform on which OUD 11g / 12c is running, to 14c Certified Linux 8 or 9 or certified platform.

       Refer : OUD 14c : OUD 11g / 12c to OUD 14c Out of Place Upgrade (Doc ID 3078341.1)
