Purpose

While you cannot upgrade or expand your existing Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.0) installations to 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.2), you can install a 10.1.2.0.2 middle tiers against an existing 10.1.2.0.0 Infrastructure. Once a new 10.1.2.0.2  middle tier is installed it can be configured to serve as a replacement for the original 10.1.2.0.0 one, allowing the older middle tier to be decommissioned. This replacement middle tier is installed on the same machine using the same hostname as the original middle tier. One procedure to do this middle tier replacement will be discussed in this article.

The main reason for wanting to do this type of replacement is to obtain the bug fixes made available in 10.1.2.0.2. If the Oracle Application Server Patch Set Notes 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 1 (10.1.2.1.0) is available for your platform, then you can obtain the same fixes by applying that patchset. Applying the 10.1.2.1 patchset is preferred over following the procedure described in this note, if your only goal is to obtain the latest Oracle Application Server code.

Scope

This replacement procedure may be useful if you have an existing Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.0.0) installation and require some additional components from the 10.1.2.0.2 release, but you only want to run a single middle tier on the host. By replacing the 10.1.2.0.0 middle tier with a 10.1.2.0.0.2 one, you can access additional components like Oracle Forms or Oracle Reports using the same Oracle HTTP Server and Web Cache instances as your existing Oracle Portal. This procedure should only be used for the J2EE&Web Cache or Portal&Wireless middle tier types. Do NOT use this for a standalone Business Intelligence Middle Tier. Instead for a standalone Buisiness Intelligence installation follow the procedure documented in Appendix B of the Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer Configuration Guide 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1) for Microsoft Windows and Solaris Operating System (SPARC) Guide.

Other usage for this procedure are E-Business Suite Release 11i customers Installing Oracle Application Server 10g for use with it. <Note:233436.1> "Installing Oracle Application Server 10g with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i" explains this requirement.

Understand that this procedure is only replacing the middle tier software. It does not update the Oracle Application Server Infrastructure home, and also does not upgrade the metadata used by the middle tier components to the version 10.1.2.0.2 level. Components like Oracle Portal and Oracle Wireless continue to execute with a version 10.1.2.0.0 Repository. As mentioned above, installing the 10.1.2.1 patchset on your existing 10.1.2.0.0 home will provide the same software versions as those included in 10.1.2.0.2.

Also be aware that the Installation of a new middle tier does not copy changes made to configuration files from an existing middle tier. All custom changes will need to be redone, and additionally files may need to be manually copied between Oracle Homes. The current Web Cache configuration can be migrated to the new installation with the Upgrade tool.

Existing SSO Partner registrations are not affected by this replacement. They continue to remain available as before. Additionally Oracle Portal product metadata is not changed. Portal pages that have been developed are unaffected by this procedure.
