HTTP-500 Internal Server Error with SSO Login After Configuring Authentication with Digital Certificates (Doc ID 352927.1)

SSO has been configured for certificate authentication using the online documentation e.g. Oracle® Application Server Single Sign-On Administrator's Guide 10g (9.0.4):  Section 7 Signing On with Digital Certificates  (or 10.1.2 or 10.1.4 editions)

Attempts to login with SSO fail with error HTTP-500 Internal Server Error.

ssoServer.log shows:

Thu Jan 12 18:27:44 IST 2006 [ERROR] AJPRequestHandler-ApplicationServerThread-16 Unexpected Exception received
at com.evermind.util.ReleasableResourcePooledExecutor$

OC4J~OC4J_SECURITY~default_island~1 log shows:
