This article shows how to secure J2EE applications with a 3rd party LDAP server and explains the various artifacts required to enable BASIC HTTP authentication using the 3rd party LDAP server for authentication. This note was tested with Microsoft LDAP server known as Active Directory, but the deployment descriptors should be configured the same regardless of which type of 3rd party LDAP server you use. This article concentrates on the J2EE deployment artifacts required for such a setup.
