Error ORA-12545 When Using Tnsnames To Connect From Batch Or Tso (Doc ID 398873.1)

Last updated on AUGUST 31, 2023

Applies to:

SQL*Plus - Version 9.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.5 [Release 9.2 to Oracle10g]
IBM z/OS on System z
IBM z/OS (OS/390)

Symptoms

Connecting from BATCH SQLPLUS on Z/OS to a remote database results in:

ORA-12154: TNS:  Could not resolve service name or

ORA-12545:  Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

TNSPING also fails with illegal address parameter

sqlplus using the same tnsnames entry from Unix System Services (USS) works.

Everything in the TNSNAMES entry looks correct:  parentheses match, port number is correct, host name is correct (can be pinged), sid or service_name is correct.
