Symptoms

You see a problem when using Checkout and Open on an Excel 2003 spreadsheet and try to rename the Excel sheet; for example, you opened a file called Excel_2003_file.xls (which has a dDocTitle of "Excel File Test.xls") and changed the name of the sheet from "Sheet1" to "Rename". The sheet is actually renamed to "Excel File Test.xls]Rename".

You were still able to save and close the file after this sheet rename which then checked it back into the Content Server, but you were unable to use Checkout and Open on the same file again.

If you do the same sheet rename action through WebDAV, the sheet is just renamed to "Rename" as expected. So, how can you get this to work correctly through Checkout and Open?
