How to Stop Indexing from Happening

Our database server is automatically brought down for backup and once again Verity was indexing and we received a bunch of errors in our log file.
Is there any way to either stop the indexing prior to the machine shutting down or at least to detect if the indexing is occurring and to stop the server reboot?
Or is there anyway to modify the time that the indexing runs? Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
