Problems Escaping An Option List Containing A Backslash Character

Symptoms
Example option list:
abc\mmouse
abc\dduck
abc\ccat
etc...
How to restrict this option list for certain content types with a profile? A rule was created that has the metadata field being worked with listed and also has the "restricted list" option checked with the following value:
abc\dduck
However no options show up at all in the drop down list for this field on the check in page since the the backslash character is used in my values. All the values show up if list is not restricted and the restricted list option works if I use values with out the backslash character.
