Creating a Workflow History Report (Doc ID 450492.1)

Symptoms

I understand that while a workflow is in progress a workflow file (called the companion file) is kept by the content server recording what step the workflow is in and the related workflow variables, and when the workflow is complete and the document is released, the companion file is deleted.

Does this mean when a document is released we won't have a trail of who approved the document? If the business requires a workflow trail, i.e. who approved the document at every step of the workflow, is there any way we can get this information.
