Getting VDK error -146 when trying to rebuild Verity index (Doc ID 450753.1)

Symptoms

The following error shows up when trying to run the full rebuild of the Verity Collections via Repository Manager:

"Unable to index metadata only. This may indicate the collection is damaged. Indexing aborted."

In the etc/log, the following is printed, following an attempt by Verity to bulkload updates:

"stdout mkvdk - Verity, Inc. Version 5.5.0 (_ilnx21, Jan 21 2005)
stderr mkvdk: VDK error -146: couldn't do submit
mkvdk: internal error -146: couldn't submit documents
mkvdk: internal error -146: failed to do processing"

Changes

Using an NFS mounted drive, particularly on Linux and a cluster.
