HTTP Server Error "Child Could Not Open Sslmutex Lockfile"

Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit)


Intermittently, over a period of several days or weeks, HTTP Server will suddenly lock up - neither processing connections, nor rejecting them.  
The error_log may contain thousands (typically one per user click) of the following entries :

mod_ossl: Child could not open SSLMutex lockfile /apps/oracle/oas/ (System error follows)
System: No such file or directory (errno: 2)

In addition, the opmn HTTP_Server~1   log file will show :

HTTP_Server~HTTP_Server~HTTP_Server~1 (1424822753:10549) [The connection
receive timed out]

This may be encountered with a default out-of-the-box installation.
