Loadjava fails to connect to RAC instance : ORA-12505 (Doc ID 579976.1)

Symptoms

Loading the class file SSOHash.class with loadjava fails with ORA-12505 errors when the Portal metadata repository is installed in a RAC database:

/<MIDTIER_HOME>/bin/loadjava -force -resolve -thin -user
PORTAL/<PASSWORD>@<HOSTNAME>:<DB_PORT>:<SERVICE_NAME> SSOHash.class

The error message is:

SQL Error while connecting with thin driver to <
Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12505, TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor
The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
<HOSTNAME>:<DB_PORT>:<SERVICE_NAME>
exiting : could not open connection
