LDAP Error Code 53: Function Not Implemented Error Running OID ldapsearch (Doc ID 735100.1)

Symptoms

When running an ldapsearch command  which references an attribute in its filter, errors similar to the following are received (the exact error varies according to the ldapsearch provided by different vendors):

    ldap_search: DSA is unwilling to perform
    ldap_search: additional info: Function Not Implemented

OR

    result: 53 Server is unwilling to perform
    text: Function Not Implemented

OR OID 11g:

    ldap_search: DSA is unwilling to perform
    ldap_search: additional info: Function Not Implemented, search filter attribute mysearchattribute is not indexed/cataloged

Example, searching on the attribute orclnonsslport, which is not catalogued:

$ORACLE_HOME/bin/ldapsearch -h myhost.oracle.com -p 389 -D "cn=orcladmin" -w welcome -b "cn=users,dc=au,dc=oracle,dc=com" -s sub orclnonsslport=*
ldap_search: DSA is unwilling to perform
ldap_search: additional info: Function Not Implemented

OR

ldapsearch -x -h myhost.oracle.com-p 389 -D "cn=orcladmin" -w welcome -b "cn=users,dc=oracle,dc=com" -s sub orclnonsslport=*
# extended LDIF
#
# LDAPv3
# base <cn=users,dc=oracle,dc=com> with scope sub
# filter: orclnonsslport=*
