Reports Printing Failing When Instance Setting is HTTPS / SSL (Doc ID 799171.1)

Reports Printing has been configured with APEX using the following instance settings:

Print Server Protocol: HTTPS
Print Server Host Address:
Print Server Port: 4444
Print Server Script: /fop/apex_fop.jsp (For the FOP configuration)
OR                   /xmlpserver/convert (For BI Publisher)

When attempting to print a report, the following error is seen:

Adobe could not open '<filename>.pdf' because it is not a supported file type or because the file has been corrupted (for example, it was sent as an email attachement and wasn't correctly decoded).

It is possible to access the Print Server in SSL outside of APEX using the URL, which indicates that SSL has been configured  correctly on the Print Server used by APEX:
