Goal

NOTE: This article is now obsolete because the Smart Update capability to download patches and installers has been decommissioned. For detailed instructions on how to obtain patches, please see How to Locate and Download Patches for WebLogic Server Using My Oracle Support <Note 1302053.1>. For instructions on how to apply these patches to your system, please see How to Apply WebLogic Server (WLS) Patches Using Smart Update <Note 876004.1>. For other issues relating to Smart Update, please see Primary Note on Troubleshooting Smart Update Issues <Note 1230725.1>.

The Smart Update utility is provided with Oracle WebLogic Server to download and apply patches. These patches are usually one-off patches intended to solve a particular problem, or sometimes a merge patch which brings together several other patches which all make changes to a particular Java class.

In some cases, Smart Update also provides the capability to apply a patchset or maintenance pack, which upgrades your WebLogic Server environment from one minor version to another (e.g., 10.3.0 -> 10.3.3). Generally, we recommend using upgrade installers to install patchsets, because there is greater flexibility and choice available in the upgrade installers available through My Oracle Support. See How Can I Download Upgrade Installers for Oracle WebLogic Server (WLS)? <Note 1074946.1> for more information.

These are the steps to download and apply patches using Smart Update in graphical (GUI) and console (text-based) modes. If your system is offline (that is, it doesn't have Internet access), please see How to Apply WebLogic Server (WLS) Patches to an Offline System using Smart Update <Note 876004.1>.
