Fusion Middleware 11g Installation Fails with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space (Doc ID 953141.1)

Symptoms

The error can occur during an installation of Fusion Middleware (FMW) 11g (11.1.x.x.x) on any platform.

The correct Sun JDK, Weblogic Server (WLS) and FMW software are being used as per the certification matrix and install documentation.

Depending on the installation type, the error can occur at various points during the installation and configuration.

One specific example occurs while installing Identity Management. The installer process fails whilst creating the EM Agent system component. The error reported to the install<date_time>.log shows:

The goal is to complete the installation without error.

Changes

This problem is intermittent and does not seem to affect all installation attempts. It is known to occur on both 32 and 64 bit platforms.  Although the issue was initially logged against Identity Management, it has since been reported against a Portal, Forms, Reports and Discoverer installation and it could potentially happen against other install types.
