The Portion of the Java Heap that holds meta-data describing user classes that are not part of the Java language, i.e. objects describing classes and methods are stored in the Permanent Generation area. Applications with large code-base can quickly fill up this segment of the heap which will cause java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen no matter how high your -Xmx and how much memory you have on the machine.


On Content Server our Site Studio page becomes unavailable and the following error is generated:

Unable to generate HTML page. (System Error: PermGen space) PermGen space java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

The JAVA_MAX_HEAP_SIZE=nnnn parameter has been set, but whenever it is increased to try to resolve the problem this error occurs::

Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
