Messaging Server: "Relaying not allowed" Error (Doc ID 1010442.1)

Symptoms

With the Messaging Server 5.x or Messaging Server 6.x or 7.x, when you try to send mail to an external domain, it may be returned with the error:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject:  testing 1:30pm
Sent:     12/26/2003 2:27 PM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'username@example.com' on 12/26/2003 2:27 PM
Relaying not allowed: username@example.com
