Database resource leaks occur when some code checks out a connection from a DataSource without properly checking it back in. In the realm of J2EE DataSources, this check out/check in process is handled by the server when a connection is retrieved and then closed. In this case, the code must be written to properly close a connection even if errors occur. Failing to do so results in the connection not getting checked into the pool leading to a leaked resource.
